Relax… It’s Just a Dental Appointment | Riverside Dentist

Because we realize that some of our patients are a bit skittish, we have provided a variety of relaxing items to help you to have the most enjoyable time possible. After all, we are a team working together to maintain your smile’s health. Here are some of the comfort options we have made available to our patients:

Local anesthetic. Discomfort from a dental shot is mostly due to the feeling of pressure created by the flow of dental anesthetic. We use a computer-controlled injection system called the Wand, which greatly relieves this discomfort, especially because it doesn’t look like a needle and delivers anesthetic at an optimal flow rate for a comfortable, pain-free injection.

Relaxant gas. Nitrous oxide is a relaxant gas which you breathe in via a small nasal mask, making you very relaxed during your treatment. The effects of the gas wear off within a few minutes of stopping the gas, allowing you to drive home safely.

Dark lenses. We need the bright light in order to see into your mouth properly, so we provide you with tinted safety goggles to shield your eyes.

Headphones. CD players with a variety of music and Netflix movies are available for your listening and viewing pleasure.

Blankets. Ask us for a blanket if you are feeling chilly.

Coffee and juice bar. Yes, we even have complimentary beverages and cookies. We want you to be at your most relaxed.

Compassion. The human element of care, understanding, and compassion are probably the most important in eliminating nerves. We believe we score high in this category, as we are all genuinely nice to each other.

Welcome Dr. Pavlisin! | Riverside Dentist

Join us in welcoming Dr. Pavlisin to our team. She has recently moved to California, and her practice philosophy aligns very well with ours. You may wonder if this means Dr. Middleton is ready to retire, but rest assured he is not going anywhere. We simply now have two highly skilled dentists to deliver the excellent dental care you expect from us.

I am fairly new to California having been raised in Illinois, attending dental school at the University of Illinois and then practicing there for 26 years. During that time, I continued to study advances in dentistry by attending The Pankey Institute and The Dawson Center as well as continuing to complete many courses to enhance my dental skills and to provide my patients with state of the art treatment techniques.

Since in California, I have been in private practice part time and am a Clinical Professor at Western University Dental School. I enjoy teaching and mentoring our new generation of dentists. I have also had the opportunity to donate dental care for a women’s shelter in Ensenada, Mexico and to the underserved at the Care Harbor events in LA.

I feel privileged to be joining Dr. Middleton’s team because of his commitment to dental excellence and his ethical practice philosophy. I admire the relationships he develops with his patients, as I value the relational aspect of dentistry as well. I also love the art of dentistry and how the beauty of a smile is supported by health and biology.

My husband and I will be celebrating 30 years of marriage this year. We have 5 children ages 27 to 19. My husband’s change of career prompted our move to California. Although it was very difficult leaving my wonderful patients and friends in Illinois, our family has been blessed in many ways here. I enjoy spending time with my family, hiking, cooking, reading, and Southern California gardening!! Maybe even some travel now that we’re empty nesters!

Team Members in Action!

In response to the long reported disparities in health, the 2000 Surgeon General’s Report on Oral Health and 2003 Surgeon General’s Call to Action to improve access to preventive dental care services of special and under served populations, the Registered Dental Hygienists in Alternative Practice (RDHAP) licensure category became legal in California in 2003. These specific registered dental hygienists specialize in oral health for people with complex needs often in homebound nursing homes, hospitals, residential care facilities, and other public health settings.

We want to congratulate our own Megan Graff, RDH for completing the 150-hour dental board approved course at Pacific Center for Special Care at University of Pacific School of Dentistry, and for her commitment to improving the quality of oral health of the under served. Her passion for dentistry is conveyed in the compassion and dedication she demonstrates. We are proud to have Megan as a member of our team!

Celebrating Twenty Years! | Riverside, CA

I can’t believe it’s been 20 years since I became the owner of this dental practice and was given the privilege and responsibility of caring for the patients of Dr. Ray Kelson. As I look through my patient’s charts I am honored and humbled by how many people have been with me through all these years. I want to thank each and every one of you: Those who have  been with me on this entire journey and those who have joined me along the way.

Things are quite different today in 2013 than they were in 1993. X-rays now are taken
with the aid of a computer,  making the results instantaneous and dramatically reducing the amount of radiation exposure. With new dental materials and techniques that have been developed over the years, the dental work you have done in your mouth has become
literally undetectable.   We’ve created beautiful smiles and improved the quality of life though increased self esteem and the simple pleasure of being able to eat foods free of pain.  Many of you have been able to get rid of your old dentures and have replaced them with permanent teeth through advances in implants. Crowns can be completed in a single visit with the aid of a computer. No more goop slopped in the mouth and the worry of losing your temporary crown. Medications can be given to allow you to sleep through your dental appointment. Even the delivery of anesthetic has been improved to be virtually pain-free. We have upgraded our office equipment and supplies to be as modern as possible. and are continually educating ourselves regarding the most recent advances in

Early on I made it my commitment to deliver the highest quality dental care in a
professional and pleasant manner. I feel that to do this it is important to
have a close relationship with each and every one of you. To maintain this high
level of service I have resisted contracting with high volume dental insurance
plans that would limit my abilities to deliver this kind of care. I hope to
continue to practice this type of care in spite of the changes that are coming
in the insurance industry. I want to thank you for your continued trust in me.
I don’t take this trust lightly and I am honored to serve you.

Lety’s Story From Peru

My recent humanitarian mission to Peru was such an uplifting life changing experience for me. I would like to once again thank Dr. Middleton and the rest of my extended family here for all the support and encouragement that I received making this trip possible.

I had the opportunity to assist as a surgical scrub along side some amazing surgeons and surgical residents from Loma Linda Medical Center in Oral Facial reconstruction surgeries. I also had the unique opportunity to view an entire open heart surgery from start to finish. That reinforced the valuable message that “we must stay Heart Smart, always, not just in the month of February.”

Other highlights of my trip included our excursion to Cuzco & the Sacred Valley of the Incas, and my venture that I survived my hike up Wayna Picchu.

I am certainly looking forward to next year’s mission.

Lety’s Going to Peru

Lety’s Going to Peru

We’ll be missing Lety this Spring when she is out of the office for a few weeks. A vacation it won’t be though, as she will be heading out on a Humanitarian Trip. She will be on a journey to Peru with Condor Humanities. The volunteers leave for Peru on March 23rd to give their time and services to help with the medical needs of the poor. Since she is a registered dental assistant, it is a perfect fit for her to be a part of the Oral Facial Surgeons team of volunteers operating on adults and infants with facial deformities, such as cleft palates.
However, she does need sponsors to make this awesome opportunity happen.
Any amount you can donate is greatly appreciated and it is all tax deductible!
There are two ways that you can help:

Nan’s Story

As October rolls around, we begin to see pink ribbons all around us – a reminder that we need to remain vigilant in the fight against breast cancer. One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. More than 2500 women in Inland Southern California will be diagnosed with breast cancer in the next year. We hope you will join us in the fight against this disease and in recognizing the courage and determination of those whose lives have been impacted by it.

Nan (the first person you see when you step into our office) has her own story to share about her battle with this disease:
Join me in celebrating Breast Cancer Awareness month in October. As many of you know I am a breast cancer survivor of 19 years. Yippee! The day after my 35th birthday I was diagnosed. After a mastectomy, chemo, and radiation I thought I was done with it. And then, 6 years later, I did it all over again.

The challenges were many but the rewards have been endless. I agonized over maybe not seeing my kids graduate high school. My husband Rick and I not only saw high school graduations, we also attended a college graduation, 2 weddings and have been blessed with 3 grandkids. We are also looking forward to attending our youngest sons wedding this October.

Another reward, 15 years after that 1st diagnosis I underwent breast reconstruction. (See it’s never too late.) What a wonderful journey that was. I am so lucky to have the opportunity to give back, by sitting on the Image Reborn panel for breast reconstruction.

So please, women and you men, do a self breast exam every month. It may save your life like it saved mine.

In great health,

Nan Jones
